Young Carers

What is a young carer?

A young carer is someone under 18 who regularly helps look after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill or disabled.

What a Young Carer might do:

  • Practical tasks such as cooking, housework or shopping.
  • Physical care such as getting someone out of bed.
  • Emotional support.
  • Personal care, such as helping someone dress.
  • Collecting family prescriptions.
  • Helping give someone their medicine.
  • Looking after brothers and sisters.

The commitment we hold for all our young carers is to make sure they are able to attend and strive in school the same way as our other pupils and achieve their full potential through accessing extra support via the Young Carers Operational Lead Mrs Petts.

The Young Carers Operational Lead, Mrs Petts, is in school to support young carers and their families, offering non-judgemental guidance and support for the family and young carer.

If you think your child is a young carer, they may be entitled to extra support in school, such as:

  • Lunchtime play sessions every Thursday.
  • Extra help with homework.
  • Emotional support from our Young Carers Operational Lead.
  • Advice and support for Young Carers and their family.
