Wednesday Workshops!

The whole Year 2 team hopes you can join us on a Wednesday morning, if possible, until 9:15 am to share in your child's learning. There will be a range of tabletop activities running each week if you are able to pop in.

There will be a piece of homework to complete each week. It will be handed out on a Friday and expected in for marking on a Thursday.

Reading and spellings

Please read with your child every day for 10 minutes and sign in their Monkey Reading Record.

Children will be receiving spellings every Friday, which will be tested the following Thursday. Spelling lists will be linked to each child's daily phonics lessons, which focus on a sound or rule, and spellings will be put into context, so please help your child to put their words into a sentence.

Please play phonics games with your child to help retain the different sounds. There are free games and resources on:

We also have books set on Bug Club which have been tailored to each individual child. We are in the process of providing each child with their login which will be coming home shortly.

This term's topic is Magical monsters and where to find them.

We will be looking at Traditional Tales during the first half term. We will focus on the story of Three Billy Goats Gruff and write our own version of the tale. We will also explore Where the Wild Things Are and use it to write explanations about shelters.

Our focus for grammar will be on adjectives that use the suffixes -est, -er, -ful, -ness; question marks; statements; the conjunctions 'and' and 'but'; subordination using 'because' securing sentence structure.

Will we continue our work on Monster Phonics. The key sounds this term will be:

dge, soft g, c, kn, gn, wr, le, il, el, al, homophones, suffixes that drop the e, double consonents, suffixes that change y to an i.

In Maths, we will ensure that we are fluent in numbers to 20. Including, mental addition and subtraction; counting on and back in ones and tens from any number; finding complements of 10 and 100.

We will explore two difit numbers; representing, ordering and comparing numbers to 100.

In measures, we will begin looking at quantity through practical activities.

We will continue our Big Maths challenges every week.

In Science, we will be investigating everyday materials by bending, twisting, squashing and stretching them and use our learning to build a shelter for a troll.

 Topic projects

Computing project - We will be learning how to share information safely by sending emails to the Yeti.

Music project - We will be singing lullabies to help monsters go to sleep, exploring how we can use our voices in different ways.

Art project - We will be creating papier mache monster masks using the work of Venetian sculptor Sergio Boldrin as inspiration.

DT project - We will be building a shelter for a monster, carefully considering appropriate materials.

In PE, we will be practising gymnastics skills, especially holding a balance with control.

RE this half term will be about exploring Muslim and Christian prayers and actions.

We will be learning about Being Me in My Own World and exploring our hopes and fears for the year.

We will continue to try to beat our score in Big Maths! We do Big Maths every Friday and some of us are now trying to answer 15 questions in 20 seconds!

Please encourage your children to challenge themselves and practise their learning at home by visiting:

All children should have a pair of INDOOR shoes to change into from their OUTDOOR shoes. Please check PE kits are complete, with all items clearly named and labelled.

Teddy Bear's Picnic

On Tuesday, Starfish Class were excited to take part in our Teddy Bears Picnic.

In the morning, we all brought our teddys to school for the day, where they were able to see our classroom and watch our learning. We are very proud of our learning and enjoyed sharing our knowledge with our teddys.

The afternoon came and the excitement for the Teddy Bears Picnic was mounting. We had a brilliant time with our teddys; to begin with, we spent some time getting to know all of the teddys in Starfish Class. After we had got to know the teddys, we had lots of scrumptious snacks and drinks before we went outside to play games with our teddy bears.

We all had a fabulous time at the Teddy Bears Picnic!

Here are some images of what we have been getting up in Starfish!

Career's Day

On Friday 18th January, we had a career's day. Starfish class came to school dressed as the careers that they would like to have in the future. What an exciting range of careers we have in our class!
