We take our roles very seriously and inform the class of all the latest news and events. We attend weekly meetings and sometimes we lead assemblies. 

Awards

We had a lovely assembly finding out who our Head Boy and Girl will be this year, along with the rest of the pupil leadership team. We look forward to our first Celebration assembly next week!

Wednesday Workshops!

The whole Year 2 team hopes you can join us on a Wednesday morning, if possible, until 9:15am to share in your child's learning. There will be a range of table top activities running each week if you are able to pop in.

 

Reading

Please read with your child every day for 10 minutes and sign in their Monkey Reading Record.

Please play phonics games with your child to help retain the different sounds. There are free games and resources on:

We also have books set on Bug Club which have been tailored to each individual child. We are in the process of providing each child with their login which will be coming home shortly.

Spellings:

Each child will have their individual spellings to learn. Please try to learn these words over the week. The spellings will be tested on Monday so please ensure their Monster Phonic spelling book is in their book bag. 

Curriculum

Our Curriculum

This term's topic is: “I’m in Year 2 ….Get me out of here!"

 

In English we will be exploring:

Poetry: we will be exploring the structure of poetry in the form of shape poems and calligrams.

Narrative: we will start the term by taking part in our whole school writing project based upon The Spider and The Fly, where we will be learning about persuasive writing.

Grammar: we will continue focusing on the Grammar for Writing in Year Two.

Monster Phonics – daily spelling  and reading activities.

We will also be reading a range of rich texts that link to our topic.

In our Maths lessons we will be focusing on...

We will be learning about written methods of addition and subtraction.

We will then use these methods to solve a variety of problems. 

We will be exploring statistics and different ways to present and read information in graphs and charts.

  • Daily CLIC sessions focusing on core number skills to help with mental fluency.

Understanding Science and Technology:

Science: Our Science topic this half term is ‘Plants.’ We will be learning what different plants need to grow healthily. We will plant seeds and bulbs and explore which environments are best for them to grow in. We will learn how to observe the changes over time to our plants as they grow, measuring and recording our findings in different ways.

Computing:  We will be learning how to use ‘Stop Motion’ to create simple animations.

Understanding the World:

Geography: We will be exploring maps and compass points, learning how to navigate using a map. We will be creating our own maps with keys of the jungle.

RE:  We will be exploring how beginnings and endings are celebrated in different religions. We will learn how different religions celebrate and welcome new babies.

 

Understanding Arts and Culture:

Art:

We will be exploring the artwork of Henri Matisse and the use of shapes to create jungle artwork. We will be exploring shade and tint and how to create these effects using paints.

 

Understanding our Health and Well-being:

PE:  We will be developing our dance skills and choreographing a simple routine.

PSHCE: Our topic is ‘Dreams and Goals.’ We will be exploring ideas for our future and what aspirations we have. We will think about what barriers we may come across and how to overcome them. We will explore ways in which we are resilient.

 

 

We will continue to try to beat our score in Big Maths! We do Big Maths every Friday and some of us are now trying to answer 15 questions in 20 seconds!

Times Table Rock Stars

Your child has their own log on to Times Table Rock Stars. This website allows children to practise their times tables in a fun environment. Children are provided with an avatar which they are trying to get 'Rock Star' status for. With each question children get correct, they are able to earn coins which they can use to buy costumes for their avatars.
