We take our roles very seriously and inform the class of all the latest news and events. We attend weekly meetings and sometimes we lead assemblies. 

Awards

We had a lovely assembly finding out who our Head Boy and Girl will be this year, along with the rest of the pupil leadership team. We look forward to our first Celebration assembly next week!

Wednesday Workshops!

The whole Year 2 team hopes you can join us on a Wednesday morning, if possible, until 9:15am to share in your child's learning. There will be a range of table top activities running each week if you are able to pop in.

 

Reading

Please read with your child every day for 10 minutes and sign in their Monkey Reading Record.

Please play phonics games with your child to help retain the different sounds. There are free games and resources on:

We also have books set on Bug Club which have been tailored to each individual child. We are in the process of providing each child with their login which will be coming home shortly.

Spellings:

Each child will have their individual spellings to learn. Please try to learn these words over the week. The spellings will be tested on Monday so please ensure their Monster Phonic spelling book is in their book bag. 

Curriculum

This term's topic is - Magic Monsters and Where to Find Them!

 

                                           

In English we will be exploring:

Narrative: we will explore the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and write our own version of this well-known fairy tale.

Explanation: we will explore the classic story Where the Wild Things Are and use it as inspiration to write explanations about shelters.

Grammar: -adjectives that use the suffixes –est, -er, -ful, -ness; question marks; statements; the conjunctions ‘and’ and ‘but’; subordination using ‘because’; securing sentence structure.

Monster Phonicsdge, soft g, c, kngnwr, le, il, el, al, homophones, suffixes that drop the e, double consonants, suffixes that change y to an I.

We will also be reading a range of rich texts that link to our topic.

Fluency in Numbers to 20 – mental addition and subtraction; counting on and back in ones and tens from any number; finding complements of 10 and 100.

Exploring Place Value - two digit numbers; representing, ordering and comparing number to 100.

Measures – we will begin exploring quantity through practical activities.

  • Daily CLIC sessions focusing on core number skills to help with mental fluency.

Understanding Science and Technology:

Science: we will be investigating everyday materials by bending, twisting, squashing and stretching them and use our learning to build a shelter for a troll.

DT:  we will be building a shelter for a monster, carefully considering appropriate materials.

Computing:  we will be learning how to share information safely by sending emails to the Yeti.

 

Understanding the World:

Geography: we will explore the many different places where the monsters we are learning about live.

History:  we will use our history skills to recall facts about the monsters we learn about.

RE:  we will be exploring Muslim and Christian prayers and actions.

 

Understanding Arts and Culture:

Art: we will be creating papier mache monster masks using the work of Venetian sculptor Sergio Boldrin as inspiration.

Music: we will be singing lullabies to help monsters go to sleep, exploring how we can use our voices in different ways.

 

Understanding our Health and Well-being:

PE: we will be practising gymnastic skills, especially holding a balance with control.

PSHE: we will be learning about ‘Being Me in My Own World’ and exploring our hopes and fears for the year.

 

 

We will continue to try to beat our score in Big Maths! We do Big Maths every Friday and some of us are now trying to answer 15 questions in 20 seconds!

Times Table Rock Stars

Your child has their own log on to Times Table Rock Stars. This website allows children to practise their times tables in a fun environment. Children are provided with an avatar which they are trying to get 'Rock Star' status for. With each question children get correct, they are able to earn coins which they can use to buy costumes for their avatars.

Notices

All children should have a pair of INDOOR shoes to change into from their OUTDOOR shoes. Please check PE kits are complete, with all items clearly named and labelled.
