Our Curriculum

This term's topic is Magical Monsters and Where to Find Them!

In our topic we will be exploring different monsters - from traditional tales. Within this topic we will explore what the monster may look like, where they like to eat and what they like to do for hobbies.

In English we will be exploring:

Narrative: we will explore the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and write our own version of this well-known fairy tale.

Explanation: we will explore the classic story Where the Wild Things Are and use it as inspiration to write explanations about shelters.

Grammar: -adjectives that use the suffixes –est, -er, -ful, -ness; question marks; statements; the conjunctions ‘and’ and ‘but’; subordination using ‘because’; securing sentence structure.

Monster Phonics; dge, soft g, c, kn, gn, wr, le, il, el, al, homophones, suffixes that drop the e, double consonants, suffixes that change y to an I.

We will also be reading a range of rich texts that link to our topic.

We will also be continuing to focus on...

  • Weekly independent writing lessons.
  • Daily reading lessons.
  • Daily phonic and handwriting lessons.

       Reading

Please read with your child every day for 10 minutes and sign in their Monkey Reading Record.

Please play phonics games with your child to help retain the different sounds. There are free games and             resources on:

       http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/

We also have books set on Bug Club which have been tailored to each individual child. We are in the                 process of providing each child with their login which will be coming home shortly.

       Spellings:

Each child will have their individual spellings to learn. Please try to learn these words over the week. The           spellings will be tested on Monday so please ensure their Monster Phonic spelling book is in their book bag.

In our Maths lessons we will be focusing on...

Fluency in Numbers to 20 – mental addition and subtraction; counting on and back in ones and tens from any number; finding complements of 10 and 100.

Exploring Place Value - two digit numbers; representing, ordering and comparing number to 100.

Measures – we will begin exploring quantity through practical activities.

We will also be continuing with...

  • Big Maths challenges every week.
  • Daily CLIC sessions focusing on core number skills to help with mental fluency.

Times Table Rock Stars:

Your child has their own log on to Times Table Rock Stars. This website allows children to practise their times tables in a fun environment. Children are provided with an avatar which they are trying to get 'Rock Star' status for. With each question children get correct, they are able to earn coins which they can use to buy costumes for their avatars.

Please encourage your children to challenge themselves and practise their learning at home by visiting:
