Our topic this term will be Romans. We will be exploring who the Romans were and how they came to conquer Europe and Britain. This half term we will learn about how the Romans are well known for the roads they created and even look at some which are still used today, including those which are relatively close to us. We will also be introduced to Boudicca and learn about how she rebelled against the way the Romans ruled Britain. Finally we will learn about the construction of Hadrian's Wall and what its intended purpose was.

We will be learning about persuassive letters and explore the features that we need to include in order to persuade someone towards a particular view point.

We will also be learning about adventure stories and will explore Quentin Blake's 'The Green Ship'. We will then use the story as inspiration for our very own adventure stories, where we will use expanded noun phrases and powerful vocabulary to help us clearly paint a picture of the setting for the reader to be able to imagine.

We will focus on our extended writing skills using interesting vocabulary, conjunctions, openers and punctuation.

We will be continuing to develop our handwriting through daily practice.

We will be looking at the different spelling rules and applying them to our writing. We will be using the ideas from our 'No Nonsense Spelling' strategies. The children will be learning a range of techniques to use in their everyday spellings.

We will be using our inference skills in Big Reading to help us understand what is happening in the stories we read and look at them from the point of view of different characters. We will also be using the vocabulary in the texts to help us come to create our own impressions of themes that run through the stories.

We will build our fluency working with multiplication and division using the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8 times tables. We will use multiplication and division to solve problems written in words and draw diagrams and make jottings to prove our answers. We will use our fraction work to help us find halves successfully and use this to help develop our confidence in dividing numbers. We will be using formal written methods to record our working out.

We will practise quick mental maths skills daily as well being able to calculate using efficient arithmetic methods.
