Welcome back to school after the summer holiday.I hope you all had a wonderful rest and you are ready for an exciting term of learning. As we start the Autumn term, we have lots of wonderful topics that we will be looking at. I hope you are all ready to join us on a fantastic learning adventure!

Our topic this term will be the power of fire and light fantastic.

Our role play allows you to be a firefighter or news reporter right at the scene of a city on fire.

We will be exploring a range of traditional tales and write our own version of one; we will also describe a volcanic eruption using descriptive imagery

We will read a wide range of limericks and write several of our own

We will explore features of recounts and write our own

We will present our findings about volcanoes in a report format

We will also be learning to wite in an author's style, create limericks and write letters.

We will also be reading a range of rich texts that link to our topic


Grammar: -adverbs used as openers (first, next etc); syllables and rhyme; paragraphs; inverted commas for direct speech; using conjunctions to express time, place and cause; headings and subheadings

We will be continuing to develop our handwriting through daily practice.

We will be looking at the different spelling rules and applying them to our writing. The children will be learning a range of techniques to use in their everyday spellings.

Spellings will include: colours; suffixes (-s, -es, -er, -ed, -ing); prefixes (dis-, un); 20 words from statutory list; ei, homophones

We will be using our inference skills in Big Reading to help us understand what is happening in the stories we read and look at them from the point of view of different characters. We will also be using the vocabulary in the texts to help us come to create our own impressions of themes that run through the stories.

We will practise quick mental maths skills daily as well being able to calculate using efficient arithmetic methods.

We will be investigating light, including reflection, shadows, how we see, darkness and safety.

we will be swimming this term and also playing tag rugby, focusing on moving appropriately in game situations as well as throwing and catching skills

Our PE lessons will be on Monday and Tuesday. However, please ensure that your child has the appropriate indoor and outdoor PE kit in school throughout the week as PE lessons may need to change due to adverse weather conditions.

Please note the school PE kit consists of:

  • Pale blue PE t-shirt with the school logo on
  • Navy blue shorts (with vertical line pattern)
  • Navy blue jogging bottoms (for outdoor PE during the winter months)
  • Trainers
  • Socks (a different pair from the ones they are wearing to school)

Please ensure that if your child has long hair that this is tied back appropriately on PE days.

Also please make sure that if your child wears earrings, they are also removed on our PE days, thank you.


We will be using search engines to research our topic and use a range of software to present our work for different purposes

We will listen to music inspired by our topic and explore how light can be musically represented as calm and peaceful or fiery and angry

We will explore printing techniques through the art of Hokusai and develop our colour mixing skills using Spanish vocabulary

We will be exploring volcanoes through a natural disasters project, including map work.

We will be exploring Hindu and Christian festivals, traditions and key events

We will be practising colours and simple introductions


Wednesday workshop:

We will be holding a weekly workshop where it would be lovely for you to come in and join in with some of the wonderful activities we are doing in Desert Class.
