Our Classroom

Our topic this term is... Look Whose Awake!

In Topic this term, we will be looking closely at nocturnal animals and their features. We will be learning which animals are nocturnal and what it means to be nocturnal. We will be working on an exciting project as part of our Topic too!

English

In English, in poetry, we will be exploring rhyming couplets in the stories that we read and developing our vocabulary. We will be exploring a range of stories with predictable endings, including Owl Babies and The Owl Who Was Afraid of The Dark. We are learning to write in simple sentences. We use Monster Phonics everyday to support our spellings.

Science

In Science we will be thinking about Animals Including Humans. We will learn to sort and categorise animals. We will be learning about fish, mammals, amphibians and birds, especially those that come out at night!

Monster Phonics

We  are using our brand new phonic scheme - Monster Phonics! Keep an eye out for all of the different Monsters who are responsible for their own sounds.

Take a look at their website where you can meet the Monsters and see some great ideas for practising phonics at home.

Maths

In Maths this term we will be looking closely at our use of prepositional language. We will also be developing our number fluency including counting, comparison, addition and subtraction.

IDuring our daily CLIC sessions, we will be focusing on our basic maths skills and how to use them to support the rest of our maths learning. On Fridays we will be taking part in ‘Big Maths’ which will help us improve our independent mental maths skills.

Homework

In Year 1, the children get homework each week, except over holidays. We try to ensure a mixture of Maths, English and Topic work and it will always be related to what we have been learning in class the previous week. We hand out homework on Fridays and ask for it to be handed in every Wednesday.

Please make sure that homework is completed on-time, in pencil and by your child. Obviously we want you to help and support your child with their homework but we expect to see the child’s own work and all we ask is that they have given it a go themselves.

Reading

We ask that the children read a little every night at home and we try to read with them daily at school. Please record the reading you do at home in the reading record and indicate when the book is finished so that we can change their book. Each child will get the opportunity to change their book daily, if they need to.

Notices

Please make sure that kits are in school every day.

All children need to have two pairs of shoes in school at all times. ‘Indoor shoes’ which should be their smart, black, school shoes; and their ‘outdoor shoes’, which are for wearing every playtime, lunchtime and P.E. session that we do.

Please can you make sure that all school uniform, bookbags and P.E. kits are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
