Our topic this term is...

Rocking Royals

We will be learning about significant monarchs from the past. We will be comparing the lives of individuals from the past with our lives today. We will be exploring the concept of chronology and using our understanding to place events on a timeline.

We will be reading Steve Antony's series of books about the Queen and using this as inspiration to write our own recounts about the Queen's Handbag, which we will turn into our own News Broadcasts.

In Science, we will be learning about plants. We will be exploring how plants grow, what their charcateristics are and how they are similar and different. Of course we will be growing our own seeds and bulbs and observing them over time.

Your child will continue to learn Phonics in Big Reading sessions and in dedicated Phonics sessions each day.

We have recently started to use our brand new phonic scheme - Monster Phonics! Keep an eye out for all of the different Monsters who are responsible for their own sounds.Image result for monster phonics

Take a look at their website where you can meet the Monsters and see some great ideas for practising phonics at home.

This term we will be looking closely at our methods for mental and practical calculations. We will be exploring the language of addition and subtraction as well as increasing our mental fluency. We will start exploring Multiplication and Division by investigating equal groups and remainders. We will also be learning to tell the time using o'clock and half past.

During our daily CLIC sessions, we will be focusing on our basic number and calculation skills and how to use them to support the rest of our maths learning. On Fridays we will be taking part in ‘Big Maths’ which will help us improve our independent mental maths skills.

In Year 1, the children will receive homework each week, except over the school holidays. We try to ensure a mixture of Maths, English and Topic work and it will always be related to what we have been learning in class that week. We hand out homework on Fridays and ask for it to be handed in every Wednesday.

Please make sure that homework is completed on-time, in pencil and by your child. Obviously we want you to help and support your child with their homework but we expect to see the child’s own work and all we ask is that they have given it a go themselves.

In the first week of school, each child will be given their new reading book and a new reading record. We ask that the children read a little every night at home and we try to read with them daily at school. Please record the reading you do at home in the reading record and indicate when the book is finished so that we can change their book. Each child will get the opportunity to change their book daily, if they need to.

Please make sure that your child has their full PE kit in school, every day as incliment weather can mean our PE days will vary. We will endeavour to have PE every Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

All children also need to have two pairs of shoes in school at all times. ‘Indoor shoes’ which should be their smart, black, school shoes and their ‘outdoor shoes’, which should be trainers for wearing every playtime, lunchtime and P.E. session.

Please can you make sure that all school uniform and P.E. kits are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
